Hundreds of Individuals, Groups, and Workplaces Provide Meals to Greater Nashville Families
In support of United Way of Greater Nashville’s (UWGN) Give Thanks Day of Action, hundreds of individuals, groups and companies provided 1,456 meal boxes to families in need throughout Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Robertson, Williamson, Houston, Montgomery and Stewart counties.
The boxes were filled with food needed for a traditional holiday meal, along with supplemental food to feed a family through the holiday weekend. United Way created the Give Thanks Day of Action to relieve the financial burden that many families face during the holiday season. Based on three meals a day, the average family of four receives $10.81 a meal through public assistance programs. The average cost of a traditional holiday dinner is roughly $85. That’s seven times the amount a family has available to spend on a single meal.
“One in six children in Middle Tennessee doesn’t have access to enough food to grow healthy and strong. In a vibrant community like ours, this is unacceptable. We are incredibly grateful for the donors and volunteers who dedicate their time and resources each year to provide meals for families in need. Your generosity brings hope and health to our community, one meal at a time. The event wouldn’t be possible without our presenting sponsor Ingram Charities and additional support from Nashville Soccer Club, Aldi and Trader Joe’s,” said UWGN CEO and President Brian Hassett.
On November 12th, 144 volunteers gathered across GEODIS Park, Williamson County Health Department Annex and United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region to organize and deliver meal boxes to schools and partner agencies.
